Definitely change it at least once a year. Getting less air will cause many cars to 'burn rich'...you would see blacker, sootier smoke sometimes and definitly use more gas than you need to. Hold your hand close to the end of the tail-pipe while it is running and then smell your palm. If you smell raw, unburnt gasoline, a tune-up (including a fresh air-filter) will increase your milage. from personal experience, change air filter every time you change your oil, or at least every other time. when you put in a new air filter in your car or truck, look at the color of the element. it will be bright white, after changing your oil inspect it if it look dingy or black it is time to change. if you drive in dusty conditions you will have to change more often. now as for what happens if you don't change, you will lose fuel economy and your engine will work harder to bring in more air to run. i hope this helps.How do i know if it is time to change my air filter and what happens if i dont?
